Dover MA Shrub Transplanting: What You Need to Know

Posted on November 17, 2023

Although we’ve passed the season for planting and transplanting, there’s no reason not to be prepared for next year. Transplanting shrubs can be a tricky process, as it can be difficult to get them to thrive in a new environment. At Cataldo Landscape & Masonry, we can help you with Dover MA shrub transplanting when the time comes, but there are a few things you need to know first.

Here’s what you need to know before you attempt Dover MA shrub transplanting after the winter.

Time and Weather Conditions

To minimize stress on the plant, the best time to transplant a shrub is when it is dormant, typically in the late fall or early spring. Extreme heat or direct sunlight can be harmful to a shrub you are trying to transplant. To avoid unnecessary damage to your shrub, it’s best to transplant it on a cloudy day or later in the afternoon. Even in seasons with cooler temperatures, you want to do everything you can to protect your plant while moving it to a new location.

Preparing the Shrub and Soil

Before you transplant your shrub, you need to prepare the shrub and the soil in the location you are moving it to. Well-hydrated plants tolerate transplanting better, so water your shrub a day or two before you plant to transplant it. To limit the time the shrub’s roots are out of the ground, dig the hole in the new location before removing the shrub. The hole should be wider than the root ball and the same depth. The shrub’s new spot should have similar light, soil, and moisture conditions to its current location. Replicating the conditions will maximize the chance that it will thrive after being transplanted.

Establishing the New Location

Once your shrub is in its new location, you have to work to establish it there. Immediately after transplanting, water the shrub and remove any air pockets in the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist during the establishment period. To help conserve moisture, add a layer of mulch around the base of the shrub. Mulch will also help regulate the soil temperature and suppress weeds.
