What To Do With Those Fall Leaves

Posted on October 26, 2016

How many times has Cataldo Landscape and Masonry told you that you should clear your yard of leaves and debris during the fall season? We’re sure more times than you can count, but we are the landscaping experts in Newton, after all. So, you took our advice and now you have a pile of leaves you don’t know what to do with! We have a few ways of using up that pile that is both practical and easy (and it can save you some money)!

Create homemade mulchfallleaves

Have you ever seen large piles of leaves in your friends or neighbors’ yards that just never get cleaned up? Often times, they are creating their own mulch. Dried, dead leaves hold a high concentration of nutrients. Combined with other similar debris you find in your yard, like grass clippings, can make for a great mulch pile.

Add to your compost

Do you have your own vegetable garden? Forget spending money on store compost and consider making your own! We mentioned the nutrients, and that’s enough of a reason to use it on your vegetables like you would your perennials! The most important part of a compost is keeping it moist and turning over the throughout the year.

Insulate your flower bed

If you can make your own mulch out of leaves, why couldn’t you use them as an insulation for your flowers? Leaves can create a thick layer over the ground, and can protect your plants from the damages caused by harsh winter weather. Not only is this great for saving your plants, you don’t have to go out and buy your own mulch.
