However, with the right strategy and help from our team of Boston landscapers at Cataldo Landscape & Masonry, you can have a gorgeous lawn that is the envy of the neighborhood.

Is your grass looking patchy? Our Boston landscapers have some tips to help revitalize your lawn.

Seed Annually

Annual seeding helps fill in sparse areas of your lawn and maintain growth. To make the most of this practice, you need to know the best time to seed. In general, you should seed your lawn in the spring or fall, depending on local weather patterns and the type of grass. Some grasses are warm-season (plant in the spring), and others are cool-season (plant in the fall). No matter which type of grass you are growing, you want to avoid seeding during extreme temperatures. Long story short, seed every year to maintain growth, but not in the middle of summer.

Seasonal Considerations

If you’re starting from scratch, do you seed your lawn in spring or fall? For lawns that are already growing warm-season grass, you should seed in the spring, it is usually better to opt for cool-season grass and seed in the fall.

Why does the fall have the edge over the spring? There are a few reasons, but they boil down to weather conditions and competition. By the fall, the scorching temperatures of summer have passed, so you don’t have to worry about the grass dying because it’s too hot.

But what do we mean by competition? We’re referring to all the other plants growing in your yards besides the grass. In the warmer seasons, plants like crabgrass and weeds are competing with your grass for water in sunlight. However, once fall arrives, most of the competing weeds have died. Your grass then has a full season to soak up water and sunlight, plus an additional growing season in the spring.
