Summer Lawn Care Tips to Keep Your Grass Green and Lush

Posted on May 9, 2025

As temperatures rise, maintaining a healthy lawn becomes more challenging—but it’s also more important than ever. A well-kept yard doesn’t just look great—it adds curb appeal and value to your property. That’s why summer lawn care is a great opportunity to help clients preserve and enhance their investment. Here are some essential tips from our trusted Massachusetts landscapers to keep grass green, lush, and thriving during the summer heat.

Water Wisely

Many homeowners make the mistake of watering too often or at the wrong time of day. The key is to water deeply but infrequently—about one inch of water per week, including rainfall. The best time to water is early in the morning, between 6–10 a.m., when temperatures are cooler and evaporation is minimal. Avoid watering in the evening, which can invite disease due to excess moisture sitting overnight.

Mow Smart

Raise your mower blade during the summer. Taller grass (around 3–4 inches) shades the soil, helping it retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Make sure your mower blades are sharp for a clean cut; dull blades can tear the grass and lead to brown, ragged tips. Also, don’t cut more than one-third of the grass height at a time.

Fertilize with Care

Applying too much fertilizer in hot weather can stress your lawn and lead to burn spots. If you didn’t fertilize in the spring, consider using a slow-release formula in early summer. Avoid fertilizing during heatwaves or droughts—your grass is already working hard to survive.

Keep an Eye on Pests and Weeds

Summer is prime time for pests like grubs and chinch bugs, which can damage grass from the roots up. Watch for patches of thinning or yellowing lawn. Also, keep weeds at bay by pulling them early and using a spot treatment where needed. Healthy, dense grass will naturally outcompete most weeds.

Aerate if Needed

If your lawn feels compacted or you notice water pooling, aeration can help. Aerating in late spring or early summer opens up the soil, allowing water, nutrients, and oxygen to reach the roots more easily.
